6/25/07 On our first day in the Galapagos Islands we learn how difficult it can be to tell apart the 13 species of finches on the islands. There are 3 Ground-Finches (Large, Medium and Small) and 2 Cactus Finches (Large Cactus Finch and just Cactus Finch) that look very much alike with the males being all black and the females similar to our House Finch in being brown with streaked underparts. I took this photo in the highlands of Santa Cruz and believe it is a male Medium Ground-Finch.
